5 Ways to Beat Mental Fatigue

Whether it’s once a year or once a day, mental fatigue is something we all experience at some point in our lives. Sometimes you can predict its arrival and sometimes it hits you out of nowhere. Whatever your relationship with mental fatigue, there are actions you can take to help deal with it (and in some cases even get rid of it). Read on to discover the top 5 ways to beat mental fatigue.

1. Exercise

For some people exercise is a joy – for others it’s hell. Whatever your stance, there is no doubting that physical activity (be it running, football or the gym) is a great way to tackle mental fatigue. It can be difficult to start but once you get into a routine you will find the experience a lot more enjoyable and it will energise your mind and body. Plus it will help you get that body you’ve always wanted!

2. Meditate

By meditation we don’t mean sitting with your legs crossed while floating on a cloud. This can be as simple as taking 20 minutes out of your day to sit down in a quite space and think of nothing. Push all work-related issues to one side and try to relax. It may feel silly at first but if you stick at it you will free your mind up of the burdens that are causing your fatigue in the first place.

3. Listen to music

Music is a great way to relax and escape from it all. Whether it’s at home with the volume turned up or sitting in a comfy seat with your headphones on. Music can really help your mind relax and lessen the strain of mental fatigue. Perhaps you could combine this tip with tip number 2 and set aside 20 minutes each day to listen to your favourite tunes. Listening to classical music, if you are yet to do so, can really help your mind escape the stress of everyday life and will go a long way to beating mental fatigue.

4. Sleep

Probably the most obvious one but it’s amazing how many people underestimate the importance of sleep. If you are mentally exhausted on a regular basis and failing to catch a good night’s sleep then you will soon find yourself in a never-ending loop. Take steps to go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning – this will help train your body into a routine, which will subsequently help tackle mental fatigue during the day. Fail to do this and it’s a recipe for complete mind and body shutdown!

5. Have some fun

Mental fatigue doesn’t come from having fun. Usually it’s a by-product of work, children, exams and other time-consuming and stressful activities. A great way to ease the mind of potential exhaustion is to have fun. Put simply: do what you enjoy, whether that’s computer games, sport, something creative or reading. If you can make the time to experience some enjoyment in your day, it will take your mind off the thing that’s making your brain tired.

Regardless of the reasons behind your mental fatigue, the above tips are sure to help. Nothing on the list is a big ask – it’s all about making the time for it, even if it’s only 20 minutes each day. Exercising your mind or body in a way that’s enjoyable, or by simply shutting your brain off altogether, are just some of the ways you can help tackle mental exhaustion. Get it right and you’ll feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the world!
