General Oral Hygiene

We all want to have a beautiful, bright smile. One major part of achieving this is ensuring that we maintain our teeth the best that we can. Our teeth are some of the most important bones in our body. They help us to chew food and also to speak properly. We need to take good care of them so as to prevent various destructive oral diseases and conditions. We also need to take good care of our gums for the same reason. Some of the problems that can affect our teeth include cavities, plaque, tartar and abscesses. Our gums can suffer from periodontal disease, infections and inflammation. These diseases can cause us terrible pain and even tooth loss. How can we avoid this? We can practice good general oral hygiene. Here is how to do it.

Brush your teeth after every meal

This is the easiest way to maintain good oral hygiene. You should brush your teeth after every meal to prevent food particles from lodging in them to provide a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Ensure that you use a toothpaste with fluoride in it. Moreover, make sure that you brush your teeth at an angle of 45 degrees. Point your toothbrush near the gum line so that the bristles can clean the edge of your gums and your teeth too. Remember to use a back-forth, up-down movement while cleaning your teeth. Also, brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth too. This prevents the buildup of bacteria that cause bad breath.

Floss your teeth

Due to its demanding nature, flossing is seen as more of a chore than a hygienic activity. We all grapple with remembering to floss after brushing our teeth. However, it is a very important activity that we should always perform on a daily basis. Flossing helps us to eliminate particles of food and other items the bristles on our toothbrushes cannot reach. You should floss at least once every day so as to maintain good oral hygiene.

Limit the amount of sugars that you consume every day

There are many foods and drinks that contain way too much sugar than is healthy for our teeth. Examples of these are soda, cake, sweets and sweeteners. It is important to limit our consumption of these foods and fluids for the purpose of good oral hygiene. Sodas and fizzy drinks contain additives such as food dye and corn syrup. These can discolor your teeth. Moreover, when we eat sweets, they can lodge in our teeth and cause cavities. Thus, limit your consumption of these items for the good of your teeth.
